Things You'll Need
- Gnat granular repellent
- Marigold flowers
- Witch hazel or olive oil
- Essential oil
Instructions
Remove any standing water sources from your property. Removing water sources in your yard will inhibit the multiplication of gnats, since gnats lay eggs in water. Change your dog's water bowl and any bird bath water twice a week.
Apply a gnat granular repellent to your grass that is natural and safe for your outside dog. Natural repellents, such as the one from Nixalite, consist of essential oils that will not harm the environment and will keep away flying pests. Nixalite contains lemon grass oil, mint oil and garlic oil. When the granules are applied to grass, Nexalite works as a turf builder and conditioner as well. Sprinkle the repellent on the grass every three weeks for best results.
Plant marigold flowers around the perimeter of your yard or around the main area your dog inhabits. Gnats do not like the flower's fragrance.
Create a natural spray repellent using essential oils. Use 10 parts witch hazel or olive oil as a base. Add one part cedarwood or neem oil and mix together. Empty the mixture into a spray bottle to apply to your pet.
Purchase a gnat repellent specifically designed for pets if you are unable to make your own. Natural repellents, such as Absorbine UltraShield Green, are non irritating and last for eight hours. Reapply the product as needed.
