How to Control Roundworm Infestation

Roundworms are members of phylum Nematoda, and commonly infect pets. Puppies and kittens are especially susceptible to these intestinal parasites, and humans can get roundworms from their pets. These long, spaghetti-like worms can lead to severe health problems and can even kill young animals. Fortunately, a roundworm infestation can be easily controlled if it is caught early.

Know the symptoms of roundworms. Dogs and cats may defecate worms when the infection is severe. In most cases, however, owners never see the actual worms. Vomiting, bloody stool and diarrhea are the most common symptoms of a roundworm infestation in dogs, cats and people. If your pet exhibits any of these symptoms, take it to the vet immediately.

Treat your pet with a de-wormer. Your vet will prescribe the correct de-wormer for your dog or cat. Puppies and kittens should be given preventative roundworm treatment even if they don't have symptoms of roundworms. Young animals typically carry worms they were exposed to at birth. Roundworm treatments typically begin to kill worms immediately, but the worm larvae will remain in your pet's feces for several weeks.

Practice good hygiene. Wear latex gloves to remove dog feces from your yard and cat feces from the litterbox. Animals can become reinfested when they come into contact with feces. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling your infected dog or cat. Roundworms can spread from pets to their owners.
