How to Remove Foxtails From a Dog's Toes

Foxtails are seeds of tall grasses that grow in many regions of the United States. These seeds are hard, sharp and barbed. They can become stuck in a dog's ears, eyes, paws or other parts of the body. The barbs can burrow into the dog's skin and cause severe damage and possibly infection. Do not attempt to remove embedded foxtails yourself, but always check for loose foxtails and remove them before they become stuck to the dog's skin.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush the fur along a dog's legs and paws with a dog brush after each walk if the dog has been near tall grasses. Then brush the rest of the body. This will help remove any loose foxtails.

    • 2

Check the dog's paws carefully. Spread the dog's toes and check in between them. Pull off any foxtails around the toes that are not embedded in the skin.

    • 3

Cut a foxtail out of the fur around the toes if it is tangled and does not come free with brushing. Use sharp scissors and only cut the pieces of fur stuck to the foxtail. Be careful not to cut the dog's skin.
