How to Care for Great Danes

Lots of prospective dog owners might think canines only need food, water and some daily attention. Great Dane owners, however, find that providing for these large dogs can be more challenging than taking care of a smaller breed. The dog that stands head and shoulders above most other breeds requires much more responsibility and consideration.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed both Great Dane puppies and adults a premium dog food that consists of no more than 24-percent protein and 14-percent fat. Place the food in a bowl that is elevated on a feeder stand to reduce digestive issues. Feed a Great Dane 3 to 6 cups of food twice a day.

    • 2

Find a local veterinarian, preferably one who specializes in large breeds. Vaccinate your puppy and follow up with yearly boosters to maintain the dog's immunity to disease. Schedule wellness appointments periodically to ensure your dog stays healthy. Trim the dog's nails once a month.

    • 3

Take your Great Dane for a 30-minute walk at least once each day. Avoid jogging with a Great Dane until it is at least 1 year old. Provide the dog with access to a large, fenced yard, if possible.

    • 4

Socialize your Great Dane with other neighborhood dogs or take it to a dog park. Train your Great Dane not to jump on people because the dog could seriously injure someone, especially children. Keep your dog on a leash at all times when outside the home.

    • 5

Keep the dog in a crate with adequate space if you leave the dog alone indoors. Leave the crate open when you are home because Great Danes generally prefer to sleep in the crate. Avoid leaving the dog in the crate for more than eight hours.
