DIY Heat Mats for Pets

Many smaller breeds of dogs, including Chihuahuas, become cold during the fall and winter months. Other breeds, including German shepherds, Great Danes and mastiffs, are prone to arthritis because of their size or higher activity level. Cats also enjoy curling up on a warm blanket during the colder months. One way to warm your pet and help soothe the symptoms of arthritis is with a homemade pet heat mat. The mat is made using inexpensive materials that are microwaved to provide gentle heat.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate an old, clean standard cotton pillowcase. Use any pillowcase, including flannel, that is made from 100 percent cotton.

    • 2

Fill the pillowcase halfway with uncooked rice.

    • 3

Close the open end of the pillowcase and pin it together to hold it temporarily.

    • 4

Sew the pillowcase closed with a running stitch using a needle and thread. Remove the pins. Sewing the pillowcase closed will ensure that the pet is not able to open the edge and consume the uncooked rice.

    • 5

Place the pillowcase in the microwave and heat on the high setting for 1 to 2 minutes. Microwaving the pillowcase for any longer could cause the pet to overheat.

Set the heat mat on the floor for the pet. Cover the heat mat with a towel to provide an extra barrier. The towel is also washable and will protect the heat mat from becoming covered with pet hair.
