How to Use Gold Bond Medicated Powder on Dogs

Dogs will sometimes develop serious skin rashes that require careful treatment; Gold Bond Medicated Powder may help your dog's itching skin. The powder works to soothe skin and absorb moisture in order to stop persistent itches. Although many people use Gold Bond to relieve dogs' skin problems, the Food and Drug Administration has not evaluated its effectiveness for this purpose, so you should contact your veterinarian before doing so. If you get the go-ahead, you can use Gold Bond as part of a program to treat your dog's itch.

Instructions

    • 1

Groom and bathe the dog using the medicated shampoo, leaving the suds on for about 15 minutes. Watch the dog during this time to make sure it does not lick the suds.

    • 2

Rinse the dog when the time is up, and repeat the washing process, leaving the suds in for about five minutes this time before rinsing. Pat the dog dry.

    • 3

Use the antibacterial spray on the sore areas, avoiding the eyes, nose and mouth. Let it dry for a few minutes.

    • 4

Take the dog outdoors, then powder the dog thoroughly with Gold Bond. Do not let any powder get in the eyes, nose or mouth.

    • 5

Put the onesie on the dog to keep it from licking the affected areas and swallowing the powder. If your dog is too large for a onesie, use an old T-shirt and tie a string around the dog's stomach to keep the shirt from riding up and exposing the medicated areas.

Put Benadryl caplets in the dog's food, once in the morning and once in the evening, to curb itching. Make sure you use the right dosage for your dog's weight; give the dog about a milligram per pound. Benadryl is generally considered safe for pets, but check with your vet before using it just in case, as your dog may have special needs.

Repeat the procedure after a week, followed by another bath and powdering in two weeks, and then another one month after that.
