How to Stop Your Dog's Ears From Smelling

A strong odor coming from a dog's ears means, at the very least, that the dog's ears are dirty. More seriously, it can be a symptom of an ear infection caused by either fungus or bacteria. Breeds with ears that flop over are particularly prone to this type of problem. If you have noticed an unpleasant smell coming from your dog's ears, do not ignore it. Treat the problem as soon as possible for the health and happiness of your pet.

Make an appointment with your veterinarian to have the dog's ears checked before doing anything else. This is particularly important if the odor is accompanied by the dog scratching and shaking its head. If the smell is the result of an infection, your vet will be able to prescribe medication to clear it up. When your dog's ears are free from infection, begin a regular ear cleaning regimen to keep them healthy.

Purchase a dog ear cleaning solution either from your veterinarian or from a local pet store. Keep this solution and a supply of cotton balls close at hand when it is time to clean the dog's ears. You may also want to consider asking a friend or family member to help you, particularly if your dog is prone to squirming.

Sit beside your dog and talk to it in a soothing tone of voice. If you are using an assistant, have him gently hold the dog in place. Moisten a cotton ball with the ear cleaning solution and use it to wipe the inner surface of the dog's ear flap.

Moisten a second cotton ball with cleaning solution and go deeper into the ear, wiping out the outer part of the dog's ear canal. Do not push the cotton ball so far into the ear that it will be difficult to remove. Clean only the parts of the ear that you can see and be sure to remove all visible dirt and waxy buildup.

Repeat the process on the opposite ear. When you are finished, praise your dog and give it a treat. Re-check the dog's ears often and clean them again when you notice that they are beginning to look dirty.
