How to Treat Your Dog for a Cut From the Groomers

Dog owners should be prepared to care for wounds on their pets. Sometimes dogs have nicks and cuts that require treatment to avoid infection. Groomers can occasionally nick dogs, either on the nails or the flesh. Unless it's bleeding profusely, the cut can be treated at home without a veterinarian's care. You can make your dog more comfortable and help the cut heal by using antiseptic and gauze pads.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands with antibacterial soap and water.

    • 2

Shave the area gently with quiet electric hair clippers. If necessary, use scissors to clear away the hair from the cut.

    • 3

Dilute a non-stinging antiseptic, such as chlorhexidine, povidone-iodine or 3-percent hydrogen peroxide solution, in a bowl of warm water.

    • 4

Fill a 10 cc oral syringe with the antiseptic solution and flush the cut.

    • 5

Apply a cold, wet washcloth to the area. Hold it in place for a few moments.

    • 6

Bandage the wound with gauze pads to keep the dog from licking it. Avoid using cotton or loose-fibered materials that could stick to the cut and cause the dog pain. Change the gauze pad every day or twice a day if bleeding requires it, flushing the wound with diluted antiseptic each time.
