How to Repel Fleas

Fleas are a pet owner's worst nightmare. They are difficult to remove from pets and your home, and leave behind painful, unpleasant bites. One of the easiest ways to prevent fleas from entering your home is to repel them before they can get on your pets. There are many commercial flea repellents that can be used on pets, but they can be dangerous if ingested by cats or dogs. Natural flea repellents are inexpensive, easy to make at home and help keep fleas off your cat or dog.

Instructions

Boil a pot of water on the stove. Slice a lemon into quarters and place them into a pint-sized glass jar.

    • 2

Pour the boiling water over the lemons, filling the jar to the top. Cover with a lid and allow the water to steep overnight.

    • 3

Remove the lemon slices and pour the liquid into a spray bottle. Use the spray bottle on your pets every couple of days to repel fleas. Be sure to spray the neck and the back of the ears -- two areas where fleas commonly hide.

If you forget to use the repellent or if it does not work correctly, you can repel and kill fleas in your home using borax. Sprinkle the borax onto your carpets and work it into the carpet fibers with a broom. Be sure to sprinkle borax around the house in places where you know your pet spends a lot of time or where you have spotted fleas. Wait at least six hours before vacuuming up the borax.
