Cosequin DS Uses

Cosequin DS is a specific brand of glucosamine and chondroitin supplement for dogs created by Nutramax Laboratories. DS stands for "double strength." Glucosamine and chondroitin are natural elements that help strengthen and build cartilage. Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements are used in both people and dogs to help maintain healthy joints and to treat a variety of health problems related to joint strength. As always, check with your vet before giving any supplement.
  1. Hip Dysplasia

    • Hip dsyplasia is a condition characterized by an unstable hip joint. Over time the instability of the joint causes excessive wear on the cartilage. This can lead to osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease with symptoms of pain and lameness. While Cosequin DS will not cure or reverse damage from hip dysplasia, it is used to aid cartilage growth, which may combat the pain and lameness associated with the condition.

    Arthritis

    • Arthritis, or osteoarthritis, is a degenerative disease where there is a loss of cartilage in the joints. Cartilage protects bones in the joints from touching one another. When there is no cartilage, the bones meet with movement resulting in pain and inflammation. Normal aging and hip and elbow dysplasia are all causes of the disease. As Cosequin DS works to strengthen and build cartilage it can help combat the progression and symptoms of arthritis.

    Injury

    • Cosequin DS may be given to dogs who have experienced a joint injury. It may be given as part of a nonsurgical plan or as an aid in postoperative healing. In either instance, Cosequin DS works to strengthen existing cartilage and grow new cartilage which is essential for healthy joints.

    General Joint Support

    • Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements, including Cosequin DS, can be used as part of general health maintenance plan in dogs, particularly giant breeds, working dogs or other dogs that may be prone to joint problems. According to the manufacturer, "research in dogs administered Cosequin has shown that if Cosequin is given prior to an injury, the animal returns to normal function much more quickly."
