Yeast Infection
-
A yeast infection caused by the Malasezzia organism can result in hair loss. This type of yeast infection generally occurs in the dog's ears or on his skin. In addition to hair loss it can cause greasiness, scaliness and an increase in the pigmentation of your dog's skin, notes Dr. Jeanette Thomason. If there is a yellowish tint to your pet's skin this is a good sign that he has Malasezzia. You can treat this by rinsing your dog in a 50/50 mixture of water and unfiltered, raw apple cider vinegar, which kills the bacteria and promotes healing. However, you should not use apple cider vinegar rinses on any open wounds.
Fleas
-
If you dog has fleas and is itching excessively this is going to cause him to lose hair. Mix together 1 tbsp. of goldenseal, a couple drops of tea tree oil and extra virgin oil, 1 oz. of jojoba oil and put them in a spray bottle. Fill the bottle up the rest of the way with a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water. Spray the dog every day for a week and massage the mixture into his skin. This should eliminate the itching and subsequent hair loss.
Soothing
-
Another approach to take for hair loss is to wet a clean rag with some apple cider vinegar and simply wipe down the dog's skin. This will soothe itchiness and clean up areas that are irritated. When you dog stops itching he will stop scratching and his hair will remain intact.
What Else It Does
-
Vinegar is one of those foods that has more uses than you can shake a stick at, including medicinal remedies. You can apply apple cider vinegar to your dog's coat to keep it healthy, prevent skin irritations and correct dry skin. His coat will be shiny and soft and he will shed less, smell better and won't have dandruff. You don't actually smell the vinegar smells because it quickly dissipates. If your dog is suffering from hair loss, vinegar can help rectify this situation.
