List of Parasitic Insects

Parasitic insects are a type of animal that must feed on its host to survive. These types of insects can make their homes on animals, people and plants. Some parasitic insects are annoying and sometimes dangerous, while others help keep pests under control. When raising a pet or a child, it is important to make sure that they are free of these nuisances.
  1. Parasites That Prey on the Outside of Mammals

    • Lice, mosquitos and fleas are the most common parasitic insects that bother mammals. Lice generally feed on people, burrowing their eggs and making homes in the host's hair.

Mosquitos can be found on any mammal and feed on the blood of its host in order to keep itself alive. Mosquito bites can be harmless, except for some itching, but these little pests can carry yellow fever or malaria and may infect dogs with heartworm.

Fleas are most commonly found on household pets, like cats and dogs. These little guys can jump an impressive distance from host to host. While they are typically a nuisance, they can also transmit deadly diseases and may have been part of the cause of the Bubonic Plague in the Middle Ages.

Parasites That Prey on the Inside of Mammals

    • Some parasites, such as tapeworms or heartworms, prey on the inside of mammals. The accidental eating of flea eggs will cause this kind of parasite to develop inside a human being or other mammals, most commonly household companion pets. Tapeworms will feed on the nutrients ingested by the host until it is extracted. Dogs may also develop another type of parasite called heartworm, which can be transmitted through mosquito bites.

    Parasites on Reptiles

    • Reptiles even have issues with parasites, particularly the sandfly. This small, shrimp-like animal can jump several times its height and feed on the blood of reptiles, amphibians and humans and is usually found in warm climates. Sand flies cause painful bites and welts; their bites can even lead to a disease called leishmaniasis. This potentially serious illness can cause a variety of symptoms, including painful disfiguring welts, a stuffy or runny nose, difficulty breathing, skin and mouth ulcers, fever and abdominal discomfort.

    Parasites Found on Plants

    • There are many parasites that never even touch humans but can be a nuisance to those trying to grow plants or keep a house. Ambrosia beetles are known for feeding on wood, and can bore their way into the frames of wooden homes or trees. Weevils feed on nuts and seeds, taking them out of grains and satiating them for weeks on end. Caterpillars are also known for their insatiable appetite for leaves.
