How to Care for a Weaning Mother Dog

After giving birth to her litter, it generally takes five to six weeks for the weaning process to occur. The puppies will begin to act more independent and their newly grown teeth and nails may cause discomfort for the mother. It can also trigger a negative reaction if she is hurt. You can help the mother and puppies make a smoother transition by taking a few steps to help both parties. By keeping a watchful eye on the mother and feeding the puppies with puppy food to promote growth, the full weaning process should take about a week.

Instructions

    • 1

Separate the puppies and mother from each other. Increase the time each day until they are only together at night. This can help make the puppies more independent and give the mother the rest she needs.

    • 2

Decrease the amount of food you give to the mother. This will cause her to produce less milk.

    • 3

Feed the puppies with puppy food intended for weaning. This will make them less dependent on their mother's milk. Feed the puppies three to five times a day.

    • 4

Check the mother's breasts to see if she is producing milk. Her breasts can become engorged and painful. Place some hot towels along her abdomen and give a gentle massage to reduce the pain. Do not give your dog any food for 24 hours.
