How to Administer a Shot to a Dog From a Syringe

A pet dog can be a beloved member of a family, so it's important to keep the dog in good health. Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, infections or viruses may require medicine, sometimes administered with a syringe. Ideally, a licensed vet should administer medicine with a syringe, but this may not be a practical option if daily or weekly shots are needed. Fortunately, the process is fairly easy to learn and safe for the average pet owner to perform.

Instructions

    • 1

Screw the needle on the syringe. Stick the needle in the medicine vial and pull back on the syringe plunger to withdraw the necessary amount of medicine.

    • 2

Flip the syringe so the needle points up. Press the syringe plunger lightly to expel any air bubbles. A small amount of the medicine should come out of the tip of the needle once all air is removed.

    • 3

Have the dog lie or sit down in front of you. Squeeze the loose skin on top of either of the shoulders.

    • 4

Insert the needle in the pinched skin. Pull back on the syringe plunger slightly and check the syringe for the presence of blood. If blood is present, move the syringe to a new location directly beside the first as it means you hit a blood vessel.

    • 5

Push down on the syringe plunger to administer the medicine. Remove the needle and let go of the skin.
