Things You'll Need
- Dog toothbrush
- Dog toothpaste
- Dog mouthwash
- Dry dental treats
- Braided rope toy
Instructions
Pick out a toothbrush and toothpaste that are made especially for dogs. If you are tempted to use your own human toothpaste, don't. Dog toothpaste has ingredients that are safe for the dog's digestive system when swallowed.
Brush your puppy's teeth once each day at around the same time. At first, the puppy might resist. But if you make a habit out of it and praise the puppy for sitting still, it will eventually get used to the procedure.
Finish off the job with a spritz of mouthwash made for dogs. Some dog toothpastes have a meat aroma that appeals to dogs, but you can get dog mouthwash that smells similar to the kind humans use. The easiest way to apply the mouthwash is by using a small spray bottle.
Reward the puppy with dry dental treats throughout the day. These types of treats are designed to prevent the buildup of plaque that can cause bad breath.
Keep a braided rope toy near the puppy's favorite play area. The material of the toy mimics that of a toothbrush, helping to brush away food bits and plaque from the teeth and mouth. To clean plaque from the toy and kill infection-causing bacteria, give the toy a good cleaning every week.
