How to Fatten Up Skinny Dogs

At a young age, most dogs are at a low body weight even if they eat plenty of food. As a dog grows older, it naturally puts on weight and becomes slightly less active. In some cases, however, a dog can have a poor appetite, or it can stay at a low body weight despite eating regularly. If such situations, an owner has to work hard to ensure that the dog is eating a sufficient amount of high-quality food, and the owner may need to supplement the dog's diet with additional food items.

Instructions

Add warm water to your dog's dry food if it has difficulty chewing. This will soften the food enough that the dog will be able to eat more.

    • 2

Offer canned dog food or raw dog food instead of dry food. The moisture and smell attracts dogs to these foods and makes them more appealing. Some owners prefer to mix canned food with dry food so that the dog is receiving optimal vitamins and minerals.

    • 3

Feed your dog small amount of leftover meats, vegetables and fruits from your own meals and snacks. Dogs can benefit from eating fresh human foods, as long as the food is unprocessed. It is important to avoid feeding dogs too much human food, including vegetables such as onions, which can be harmful to dogs.

Place your dog's full food dish on the floor more than twice a day, or leave the dish out and full constantly. This will ensure that your dog is able to eat whenever it feels hungry.

Combine oatmeal, eggs or broth with your dog's food to provide a boost in calories.
