How Can I Keep My Dog's Ears Clean?

Most dog owners do not think about cleaning their dogs' ears. However, this is one hygiene routine that should not be neglected, because lack of cleanliness can lead to several health problems. A dog's ears provide an ideal environment for bacteria and fungi, which can cause serious ear infections. Cleaning a dog's ears is especially important if your dog loves to frolic in water. Dogs hate to have their ears cleaned, so prepare your dog for the cleaning session by occasionally lifting the flap of the ear and taking a peek inside. Afterward, praise the dog.

Take a ball of cotton and wet it. Squeeze out excess water. Use the moist cotton ball to clean the dirt you can see on the inside of the ear lobes.

    • 2

Squirt a good amount of cleaning solution into each ear to get rid of ear wax buildup and other debris. Massage the base of the ear for about 30 seconds. Allow the dog to shake its head to get rid of the solution from inside the ear.

    • 3

Dry the ear with a towel to get rid of any remaining solution. A moist ear is a conducive environment for bacterial or fungal growth.

    • 4

Dust the ear with ear drying powder to prevent growth of microorganisms and odor.

    • 5

Clean your dog's ears once a month. If your dog spend a lot of time playing in water, clean the ears once a week. Make ear cleaning a regular part of your dog's grooming routine to prevent future ear problems.
