How to Make a Composter for Dogs

Making compost out of your dogs waste is a very environmentally friendly way of disposing of your dogs waste. The dog compost should not be using on vegetables gardens or on fruit baring plants, only use it on ornamental trees and flower gardens. Dogs can carry giardia, E coli, salmonella and coccidia, just to name a few. Leaving the feces to rot on the ground can cause problems, as well. If left to rot the rain can wash it into water sources and contaminate beaches. Creating a composter for your dog waste is a safe way to take care of any potential problems that could make people sick.

Instructions

    • 1

Drill 3/4 inch holes approximately every 4 inches all over the plastic garbage can, leaving 6 inches around the bottom and top of the can. Use a cordless drill with 3/4 inch drill bit to create the holes.

    • 2

Cut the bottom out of the plastic garbage can, using a reciprocal saw or keyhole saw.

    • 3

Determine where you would like the dog composter located. It should be away from your water source.

    • 4

Dig a hole in the ground, big enough and deep enough for the plastic garbage can to be covered up to the holes. Allow the top of the plastic garbage can to sit above ground, at least 6 inches.

    • 5

Place the garbage can into the hole. Fill in around the garbage can with dirt and put 8 inches of crushed stone in the bottom of the garbage can, for drainage.

    • 6

Throw in your dog's waste into the garbage can and sprinkle a can of septic starter over top of it. Pour water into the garbage can, just enough to cover the dog waste.

    • 7

Place the cover to the garbage can on top. Only open to throw dog waste, grass clippings and septic stater in to keep the break down process working.
