How to Control Dog's Breath

Dogs hold a special place in our lives. Most are less like pets and more like full-fledged members of the family. Over the years, dogs have developed a reputation for having bad breath but in reality a dog with bad breath isn't normal. Bad breath in dogs is caused by a number of reasons, including poor dental hygiene, improper diet and allergic reactions to food. It is important to attack the problem from all angles to improve a dog's breath.

Watch the dog's diet. Table scraps and food that the dog scavenges from the trash or outside should be avoided. This type of food is not digested properly and causes a foul odor from the intestines. There are special brands of dog food especially blended to aid in digestion.

Brush the dog's teeth. There are many available commercial brushing kits. Be very thorough and repeat the process as needed.

    • 3

Have the dog's teeth, gums and tongue professionally cleaned by a veterinarian. Some groomers provide this service but most aren't nearly as thorough as a veterinarian cleaning.

    • 4

Give the dog a chew toy that is specifically designed to remove plaque from teeth.

Consult a veterinarian if the problem persists. There may be a food allergy or underlying intestinal problems that are causing the bad breath.
