How to Cure Demodex Mites

Demodex mites cause a skin disease in dogs known as demodectic mange. The mites spread through contact and usually the dog's immune system keeps the infestation in check. Demodex mites are most common in puppies because their immune systems are not fully developed and they can get them from their mothers while nursing. Veterinarians usually diagnose the condition with a skin scraping or biopsy from the suspected area of infection. The condition is normally treated with topical medication and diet.

Consult your veterinarian for a positive diagnosis. If your dog is older, have your dog checked for diseases that may compromise its immune system and contribute to demodex mites including hypothyroidism, cancer and Cushing's disease. Your veterinarian can prescribe a topical medication for the mites and treat any underlying condition.

Apply the topical treatment daily according to your veterinarian's instructions. Bathe the area every day with a benzoyl peroxide shampoo. Wear rubber gloves when applying the medication to your dog's skin.

    • 3

Feed your dog a healthy diet with high-quality protein, vitamins and fatty acids. Some veterinarians may prescribe a specific pet food or type of diet, such as a raw diet.

    • 4

Notify your veterinarian if your dog's condition worsens. He may need to prescribe a more aggressive treatment such as chemical dips every two weeks.

    • 5

Follow your veterinarian's advice for treatment. Avoid using folk remedies which may worsen your dog's condition.
