How to Get Passports for Puppies

In order to make sure your pet avoids quarantine when you travel to a different country, you should obtain a pet passport. This will speed up the process through customs since you will have up-to-date information about your pet's health. The process is not difficult and only requires some paperwork. A pet passport is not mandatory, but obtaining one may mean less hassle and stress for both you and your furry companion. Like any other passport, you must apply weeks in advance in order to receive it in time.

Download a pet passport application form from PetTravel to fill out. Please see Resources to access the website. These forms must be brought to your veterinarian appointment. Schedule an appointment with your puppy's veterinarian at least a few weeks prior of your travel date. Make sure that your vet is certified with the USDA. You do not want to apply for your pet's passport too late since it will take time to process.

Take your dog to your veterinarian to have it vaccinated against rabies and to also receive any other important immunization shots. Also ask your vet to fit your puppy with a microchip. It is a painless procedure for your puppy. This is a precaution in case your dog is lost when you are traveling. The microchip will track the dog's location.

Have your veterinarian fill and complete the application and also have him attach your dog's inoculation record. Submit the application to the designated mailing address. You should receive the passport within six weeks or up to three months. This all depends on how long the processing will take. If you are in a rush, you can also pay a rush order fee and you will receive your dog's passport quicker.
