Things You'll Need
- Syringe
- Vial of medication
- Treat
- Sharps disposal container for syringe
Instructions
Remove the safety cap from your syringe. Press the plunger of the syringe fully into the needle to ensure there is no air. Insert the syringe into the vial of medication and slowly pull the plunger back until the correct amount of medication has been pulled into the syringe. Ensure the medication is at the line for the proper dosing and always refer to your dog's prescription information for the exact amount of medication to administer.
Push the plunger while the needle is still in the vial to press out any air pockets and pull out more medication if necessary. Remove syringe from the vial. Hold the syringe upright and inspect for any air gaps. Push the plunger of the syringe with the needle facing upward until just a small spray of medication comes out of the top.
Gather your dog. Take the fur that is located just above your dog's shoulder and pinch it so that you can feel the skin under your fingers. Insert the needle carefully just below the raised skin you are pinching.
Pull back the plunger to inspect for any blood and ensure your are not in a blood vessel. Pull the syringe out and reposition it if you see blood; if not, proceed in the same position.
Press the plunger slowly to release the medication into your dog. Remove the needle and replace the cap. Place the syringe into a sharps container or other disposal method for needles, but do not place it directly in the trash. Give your dog a treat for good behavior.
