Types of Dog Diapers

When dogs get older, they sometimes have trouble holding their urine. When female dogs are in heat, they may drip blood. Dog diapers can help your pooch live an active life, while keeping your rugs and furniture clean. There are several types of dog diapers from which to choose, including one you can make from human diapers.
  1. Disposable Diapers

    • These are much like disposable diapers for children. They have a plastic exterior with absorbent padding on the inside to soak up urine or blood. They have a hole for the dog's tail, and some kind of adjustable strap. Disposable dog diapers are for one-time use. Once they are soiled, you throw them away.

    Belly Bands

    • Belly bands are for male dogs. They wrap around the dog's midsection, while leaving the dog's back end free. This type of diaper allows the dog to defecate while still wearing the diaper. The downside is they only work for male dogs. This type of diaper is reusable. There is an absorbent pad in the bottom that you can replace when it gets soiled.

    Washable Diapers

    • This type of dog diaper covers the dog's entire back end, with a hole for the tail. It consists of a nylon shell and disposable pad in the crotch. When the pad is soiled, you throw it away. This type of diaper doesn't cause as much waste as disposable dog diapers, and is the most economical for long-term use. When the shell part gets soiled, you can throw it in the washing machine with your laundry.

    Human Diapers for Dogs

    • You can make your own disposable dog diapers using pull-up-style swimming diapers for children. The diapers for children are much cheaper than disposable diapers designed for dogs. Cut a hole in the seat for the dog's tail. If your dog is a little small for the diaper, use tape to snug up the holes for the waist and legs.
