How to Treat a Nervous Stomach in a Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are small, delicate dogs that may get scared after meeting a stranger or encountering a bigger dog. This may lead to a nervous stomach that results in diarrhea and/or vomiting. Treating a nervous stomach in a chihuahua is similar to treating an upset stomach, but you must remember to treat your pet with tender love and care especially at this time. Above anything else, the goal is to keep the dog calm and relaxed.

Calm your chihuahua. Make sure it rests in a comfortable place, such as its bed or a favorite napping area. Comfort your chihuahua down by petting it and being by its side.

    • 2

Use an herbal supplement. Fill an eye dropper with an herbal supplement for a nervous stomach such as Tasha's Easy Does It which will help relax the dog. This herbal product relaxes the nervous system in times of stress such as traveling, thunderstorms or other situations during which your dog gets upset or nervous.

Use Pepto Bismol instead of an herbal treatment. Pepto Bismol is safe to use on dogs and helps cure an upset stomach. Give your chihuahua about a tablespoon of Pepto Bismol with an eye dropper or mix it with something moist such as wet food or a snack.

Put away any food until the dog's stomach settles. Keep the water out so your chihuahua doesn't get dehydrated.

Contact your veterinarian if excessive vomiting or diarrhea persists. It might be more than just a nervous stomach and your chihuahua may need treatment.
