Practical Remedies To Eradicate Dog Mites

Dog mites are a parasite that live on a dog, and particularly in the dog's ears, that can cause major problems for your pets. While there are treatments available from any pet store or veterinarian, there are homemade remedies that can help you eliminate dog mites quickly and efficiently. All you're going to need is a clean dog, some vegetable oil to clean the area and a home brew for mite removal.
  1. Bathing

    • There are remedies you can work into the bath that will help eliminate mites on the dog's skin. Regular soap and water will help get rid of mites, but the bath will be more efficient if you add topical treatments that are meant to eradicate the mites. These treatments can be purchased at pet stores, or for particularly bad infestations of mites a veterinarian may prescribe them for your dog.

    Ear Cleaning

    • Ears are a favorite place for dog mites, and it's important that you get them out of that sensitive area. If you hold the dog's head still and put in some vegetable oil or olive oil, then that oil can help clean out some of the grit and dirt. Let the oil sit for some time without letting the dog shake it out, and then use cotton balls or Q-tips to carefully wipe the area clear without entering the deeper and sensitive ear canal. This will help wipe the mites out of the ear.

    Yellow Dock Root

    • A remedy that you can make at home is made mostly out of yellow dock root and water. You need to mix nine drops of yellow dock root into 1 tablespoon of water. Drip this into the dog's ears using a syringe without a needle or with an eyedropper. Massage the dog's ears and then clean them after the treatment has set in. Administer the treatment once every three days for roughly six weeks.

    Almond Oil and Vitamin E

    • Another remedy that you can mix up at home is made from almond oil and vitamin E. Mix 1/2 ounce of almond oil with 400 IU's of vitamin E. Warm the mixture to body temperature -- for a dog that's about 101 degrees Fahrenheit -- and drip half an eye dropper into each ear and massage softly. Wipe away any additional treatment with a cotton ball. Administer this treatment every day for six days, drop the treatment for three, and then repeat.
