How to Put Weight on a Pitbull

Keeping a dog at a healthy weight is a challenge faced by many dog owners. Some dogs naturally tend to run lean, while others have a tendency to gain excess weight. In both cases, the dog's diet requires careful monitoring. If you are looking to help your pit bull gain healthy weight, you need to change its diet and its exercise routine. Simply increasing how much the dog eats is not going to provide it with healthy and sustainable weight gain.

Instructions

Take your dog to the veterinarian. In addition to food issues, parasites or disease can lead to a dog's inability to gain weight. Bringing the animal to the vet helps ensure that the dog simply needs a change in diet and is not experiencing any health problems.

Switch your dog food. Many dog foods available in pet stores are primarily made up of cornmeal and animal byproducts. This diet is neither healthy nor effective for your dog. When you feed a pit bull food that is high in cornmeal, most of it ends up in your backyard. Look for foods with chicken or beef meal as the first ingredient and no animal byproducts.

Follow your new food's instructions on recommended feeding amounts. Ideally, you feed your dog twice a day. If you are trying to build weight, up the food by half a cup at each feeding and watch your dog closely to assess whether the boost is having the result you intended.

Walk or run with your dog every day. Adding weight should be done in a healthy fashion, and providing your dog with exercise helps it to turn its new weight into strong muscle.

Check back in with the vet after a couple of months to see how much weight progress you are making and to spot potential allergies or other side effects from the new diet.
