Rubbing Alcohol Home Remedies for Fleas

Fleas are small parasites that are causing your dog's incessant scratching. Besides severe itching, fleas can also cause your dog to contract several diseases. This makes it important to stop a flea infestation as soon as you see the first signs. One of the quickest and easiest ways to eliminate fleas from you dog and your home is with a simple rubbing alcohol mixture.

  1. The Rubbing Alcohol Mixture

    • The rubbing alcohol repellent is simple to make. It consists of one part water and one part rubbing alcohol. The amount of the repellent you should make will depend on how much you need to use. Think about where you'll be applying the repellent: on your pets, furniture and carpets are typical places.

    Delivery Mechanisms

    • Filling an empty spray bottle with the rubbing alcohol repellent is an efficient means of delivering the repellent. Spray the repellent directly on the items you want protected from fleas. Small squirt bottles and dampening a towel with the repellent will also work. Rubbing alcohol does have a strong smell, even when diluted. Whatever method you decide to use, make sure you have some control of the amounts you apply to avoid a strong smell.

    Preparation

    • Vacuum the areas in your house that are infested with fleas. Also, wash and comb your dog's fur before applying the repellent. This repellent will kill fleas on contact. To avoid dozens of tiny dead fleas all over your house and your pets, do everything you can to get rid of them first.

    Application

    • Spray or pour the mixture around your house to act as a repellent. The rubbing alcohol has a strong scent the fleas will pick up on and they will not come near it. It is also important to spray areas your pets frequent.

    Dish Soap Additive

    • Rubbing alcohol will kill adult fleas, but eggs will not be effecting. Adding a small amount of dish soap to the mixture will kill the eggs on contact. You should add a small amount of dish soap to your mixture if you find eggs or flea larvae.

    Other Additives

    • Dish soap isn't the only additive you can use in your rubbing alcohol mixture. If you find that the rubbing alcohol smells a bit strong for your household, cut the rubbing alcohol in half and add lemon juice or apple cider vinegar.
