How to Prevent Kidney Stones in Dogs

Kidney stones in dogs are crystals that form in the kidney due to a buildup of minerals. The stones are painful and can be caused by diet or simple genetics. For dogs susceptible to developing stones, there are steps you can take to minimize the risk of this affliction. Breeds such as Dalmatians, Mini Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terriers, Poodles and Bichon Frises are more likely to suffer from kidney stones than others. Older or obese dogs also have an increased risk, as do females in general.

Instructions

Check with your veterinarian before changing your dog's diet. Dietary management is the first line of defense against kidney stones in dogs. Find different brands of dog food on the market made for dogs that are susceptible to kidney stones. These are usually lower in protein, magnesium and phosphorus. Canned food contains more moisture and can also be beneficial.

Give your dog access to plenty of fresh, clean water at all times. Water dilutes the minerals, helps keep the kidneys flushed and lowers the chance of the buildup of the crystals that form kidney stones. Although veterinarians don't know why some dogs develop kidney stones, dehydration can cause minerals to build up within the kidneys and bladder and form stones.

Take your dog out often so it has a chance to urinate. Once the dog is outside, give the animal enough time to properly empty its bladder. If you work and can't be home to let your dog out often, consider hiring a dog walker or ask a friend to check in once a day.

Exercise your dog. Exercise helps the dog's urinary system function properly. Since obese dogs are more likely to develop kidney stones, starting a basic exercise program for the dog will go a long way in keeping it trim and healthy. Don't rely only on a yard to exercise your dog. Take it for a walk once or twice a day for optimum results.
