How to Build Up the Immune System of a Canine

Just like a human's immune system, a dog's immune system can be compromised and make the animal susceptible to a bevy of diseases that could affect his quality of life. You can, however, take steps to make sure that your dog's immune system is fortified and strong to help your critter have a longer and healthier life.

Buy dog food that contains the nutrients your dog requires. Vitamins A, B, D and E are essential to your dog's diet, and will help both fortify and maintain a strong immune system. Also, look for ingredients such as milk thistle, Indian ginseng, mistletoe and cat's claw when purchasing your dog's food as these can also help fortify your dog's immune system. Avoid giving your dog foods filled with artificial additives and preservatives; these foods will not only compromise your dog's immune system, but can negatively affect overall health.

Take your dog for a walk on a daily basis and play with her. Too much stress can have a serious negative impact on a dog's immune system. Making sure that your dog gets plenty of exercise and adequate attention lowers stress levels and promotes a stronger immune system.

Add dog food supplements to your dog's diet. Include supplements such as neem oil and zinc, which work to increase your dog's T-cells and fortify the immune system. Vitamin C serves as an antiviral and antibiotic supplement for dogs. Omega fatty acids such as fish oil also are beneficial to the immune system.
