How to Cure a Dog's Cough

As with people, dogs can experience bouts of illness from time to time. Dogs can come down with a cough for a number of reasons; such as air pollutants, allergies, fungus or parasites. Special attention must be paid, as some diseases--such as kennel cough or acute tracheobronchitis--are accompanied by very distinctive coughs. Various home remedies are available for treating a dog's cough; however, first see a veterinarian.

Instructions

Take your dog to a veterinarian. She will assess the cause of the cough and prescribe any necessary medication, such as antibiotics. Clear with the veterinarian any home remedies you intend to give your dog, prior to administering them.

    • 2

Use a humidifier, a machine that introduces moisture into the air. It can help your dog to breathe easier, which will soothe the throat and reduce coughing. Alternately, run a very hot shower in a closed bathroom. Bring your dog inside the room, once it fills with steam, and allow him to sit for a short period of time. This works in a similar way to the humidifier.

    • 3

Administer a veterinarian-approved cough suppressant. Follow the dosages and time intervals recommended.

Give your dog herbal supplements to help reduce the cough. These, too, need to be cleared first by your veterinarian. According to the Dog Health Guide, bryonia and plantago lanceolata can be given in food and help to clear mucus, reducing the cough.

Monitor your dog. If its condition does not improve with treatment, or worsens, book another appointment with your veterinarian, or visit an emergency veterinary hospital.
