How to Teach a Dog to Walk on a Treadmill

Exercise is important for dogs of all sizes and breeds. You may be unable to walk your dog due to health issues, lack of time or the weather conditions. If this is the case, or if you are just looking for a new exercise routine for your dog, a treadmill workout is the ideal solution. Through careful preparation, your dog can be walking or running on a treadmill without being fearful.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow your dog time to adjust to the treadmill. Have the dog go near the treadmill while it is both on and off. When your dog gets near the treadmill without becoming scared, reward it with a treat or verbal positive reinforcement.

    • 2

Lead your dog onto the treadmill while it is turned off. Do so with the help of a collar or leash if necessary. Provide praise or a treat while your dog is on the treadmill and unafraid.

    • 3

Start the treadmill once your dog has become familiar and comfortable with it and is positioned on the treadmill facing forward. Stay calm so your dog does the same, and make sure to start at the lowest speed possible. Offer praise or a treat if your dog is remaining calm.

    • 4

Increase the speed to a speed that appears comfortable for your dog. If you think it is ready to run, increase it enough to do so. Your dog should have plenty of practice walking on the treadmill before you allow it to run.

    • 5

Run the treadmill at a comfortable speed for 5 to 10 minutes and then allow your dog to rest.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 2 through 5 on a daily basis. You can gradually increase the speed if your dog feels comfortable. Continue with praise and treats when your dog does well. Once your dog is able to walk or run for 5 to 10 minutes without getting tired, increase the amount of time slowly.
