How to Use Neem Oil for Ear Mites in Dogs

Ear mites can cause an ear infection that has symptoms such as itching, foul odor, redness and swelling. Sometimes, the ears also emit a discharge. The pain can change the dog's temperament, making it irritable and quiet. You can prepare a neem oil ear-wash at home to help relieve the discomfort. For thousands of years, people in India have been using various parts of the neem tree for cosmetic, medicinal and insecticidal purposes. Consult a veterinarian before using home remedies to treat your dog.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix one part vinegar, one part rubbing alcohol and one part water. This solution will clean the dog's ears before the neem oil treatment.

    • 2

Dip a cotton ball in the mixture and squeeze it at the dog's ear opening. Let the dog shake its head to remove excess water, then massage the base of the ears to loosen any stuck debris inside. Repeat with the other ear. This cleans the dog's ears and dislodges the ear mites.

    • 3

Use a clean cotton ball to clean the ear flaps and let ears dry thoroughly.

    • 4

Mix one ounce neem oil, one teaspoon tea tree oil, 1/2 ounce mullein or olive oil and 1/2 teaspoon eucalyptus oil. Don't use undiluted neem oil on your dog's ears because it can cause irritation.

    • 5

Dip the opening of a dropper in the oil mixture and use the dropper to introduce 10 to 20 drops into the ears of the dog. This prevents yeast and bacteria from developing in the ears. Massage the base of the ears to distribute the oil and let it dry.
