How to Get Rid of Pet Mange

Mange is a skin disease caused in mammals by tissue-burrowing parasites called mange mites. These mites are too small for a human to see with the naked eye, but the presence of mange on an animal is hard to miss. Animals suffering from the disease lose their fur and their skin becomes thick and scaly. Animals suffering from mange are more susceptible to hypothermia in the winter because of the loss of fur. Mange is treatable, but you should consult your veterinarian before beginning treatment.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a medicated dip. Clip your pet's hair short. This will allow the medicine to reach it's skin. Bathe your pet with a benzoyl peroxide shampoo, then apply an organophosphate dip to your pet's coat. Take care not to get the dip in your pet's eyes, ears, nose or mouth. Repeat every two weeks for four to six weeks.

Use a medicated shampoo. These have proved successful at fighting mange, but use the shampoo only on the species for which it was prescribed.

    • 3

Inject your pet with a mange medicine. This should be done only by a veterinarian, who is the only person qualified to decide what type of medicine to give your pet.
