How to Eliminate External Mites in Yorkie Puppies

Upon birth, puppies are exposed to all kinds of parasites and germs that could be fatal if not treated promptly or correctly. For decades the word "mange" was used to describe most skin diseases in dogs. However, the term has been refined and it is now defined as a skin disease due to the abundance of tiny parasites called mites on the surface of the skin. It is common for healthy dogs to host these parasites in small numbers. The problems occur when the mites multiply into the thousands. If spotted early these mites can be treated.

Identify the mites. This is best done by a professional veterinarian by way of a skin scrape, said Dr. Erica Roosen of the Seattle Veterinary Specialists. A veterinarian will preform a skin scrape and examine the results under a microscope to determine the type of mite and then provide treatment.

"In the end, it may be a skin allergy that is causing the itching, but it needs to be accurately determined," Roosen said.

Waiting for a short period of time may solve the issue. Mild cases of mites usually clear up in about a month, or the problem may resolve itself once the puppy is sexually mature.

If the mites do not clear up on their own, a veterinarian will likely prescribe medications containing benzl benzoate, malathion, lindane or rotenone. These drugs are toxic and must be monitored by a professional.
