How to Treat Head Lice on Household Pets

Household pets can develop head lice just like people can. However, dogs, cats and other animals cannot get lice from humans and vice versa because they are two different kinds of lice. Shampooing with a pyrethrin-based shampoo is a common way to treat head lice in pets -- and to treat lice all over the body. Other treatment options for lice on household pets are powders, sprays, or internal medication.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your veterinarian if you suspect your pet has lice. Let the vet make a definite diagnosis and then discuss treatment options.

    • 2

Shampoo your dog with the pyrethrin-based shampoo according to the bottle's instructions. While head lice may only be concentrated on your animal's head, they can quickly spread to the rest of the body; shampoo you pet's entire body regardless of where you think the lice is.

    • 3

Repeat this procedure for as long as your vet recommends.

    • 4

Apply anti-lice spray or powder to your pet if the shampooing didn't work. These are generally less effective in eradicating lice, but the products are available at most pet stores.

Use an oral treatment recommended by your veterinarian. These include major pet-care brands and may not be available over the counter.
