How to Properly Strap Your Dog for a Hair Trim

Many dogs with a heavy coat of fur tend to experience matting of the hair and dirt build-up. Trimming the hair is a good way to keep your dog's hair healthy and clean, while also keeping them cool in the summer heat. One important component of trimming your dog's hair is to make sure the dog is secured in place so that he can't move a lot and make it difficult for you to safely trim his hair.

Connect the leash to your dog's collar. The length of the leash or rope should be sturdy enough to withstand the pull of the dog. This will depend on the size and strength of the dog, but generally if you are able to safely walk the dog with the leash, you can also use it to strap the dog for trimming.

Connect the other end of the leash to a pole. You can connect it or tie it to a chair or door knob if the length of leash fits and gives the dog enough room to turn. The goal is to minimize the animal's movement, but not to make the animal uncomfortable.

Make sure the leash is not too tight. It should be loose enough to give the dog room to move his head. However, the leash should not hang down past the dog's head when connected to his collar. When you are trimming around the face and head, you'll use one hand to firmly keep the dog's head from moving, while holding and operating the clippers or scissors in the other hand.
