How to Make Oral Dog Flea Repellent

Fleas feed on animal blood, and their bites can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, anemia and even death. They also sometimes carry tapeworms and transmit them to their hosts. Sometimes topical flea medications don't provide the best protection. When a dog grooms itself or another pet grooms your dog, they can ingest the medication, leading to excessive drooling, tremors and vomiting. Oral medication doesn't carry the same danger. If you want a healthy and cheap option, make your own oral flea repellent at home.

Instructions

Add half a tsp. of brewer's yeast to your dog's food every day to provide it with B complex vitamins. Fleas don't like the taste of yeast in their blood meal, so they often avoid attacking animals that regularly eat it. Adjust the amount to match the dog's size, giving about one tsp. for every 30 pounds of body weight.

Grate half a clove of raw, fresh garlic and add it to your dog's food about three times per week. Garlic makes the dog's blood taste unpleasant to fleas and helps with its digestion. Give the dog one clove for every 30 pounds of body weight. You can also substitute fresh garlic with powdered garlic, giving the dog one tsp. for every 30 pounds of body weight.

Add one tsp. of safflower oil and one tsp. of powdered kelp or seaweed to the dog's food on the days when you don't give the dog garlic.

Add one tbsp. of organic apple cider vinegar to every cup of water in your dog's water bowl.
