How to Reintroduce Food to Dogs After the Flu

Until 2004, researchers thought dogs didn't get the flu until they discovered that a mutated strain of the equine flu virus had caused flu in greyhounds at a dog-racing track. Dogs suffering from the flu have similar symptoms as humans -- upset stomach, sneezing, and high temperature. Unlike humans, there doesn't appear to be a "flu season" for dogs -- dogs tend to catch the flu year round. Dogs exposed to high-density dog populations are more susceptible to catching the flu. When reintroducing food to dogs recovering from the flu, proceed slowly and monitor your dog's progress closely.

Instructions

    • 1

Offer 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water (depending on your dog's size) if the dog has not vomited for 12 hours. You may also give the dog 1 to 2 tablespoons of pediatric electrolyte solution diluted in water.

    • 2

Offer small amounts of bland food, such as rice, scrambled eggs, or boiled chicken breast every few hours. Keep the dog on this diet for one to two days.

    • 3

Offer small amounts of the dog's regular food interspersed with the bland food once the dog is able to eat the bland food without vomiting. Keep the dog on this modified diet for one to two days before switching back to the dog's regular diet.
