How to Use Permethrin for Fleas on Dogs

Permethrin is an extremely potent synthetic insecticide found in several different types of flea and tick medications for dogs, such as Bio Spot and K9 Advantix as well as stronger, prescription-only medications. In addition to being very effective against infestations, permethrin topical solutions only need to be applied to one place on the dog. The solution is then spread through natural body oils and collects around hair and follicles over the course of a month.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase the correct dosage of permethrin solution. The larger the dog the larger the dosage of permethrin needed to cover the dog. Use the proper amounts because over dosage could lead to health problems.

    • 2

Bathe the dog. Make sure that the dog's fur and skin are clean of dirt, since dirt may lower the effectiveness of the solution. Dry the dog after bathing.

    • 3

Hold the dog still. Well-behaved dogs may be able to sit still for several minutes without being held or leashed, while others may need some coaxing or other help. Make sure the dog will remain still enough for the solution to be applied.

Part the fur to expose the dog's skin. Typically, directions on the products specify application between the dog's shoulders but exact procedures vary by specific brand of permethrin solution and dosage. The medication must be applied directly to the dog's skin in order to be effective.
