How to Rid Young Puppies of Fleas

Just like any newborn, puppies have sensitive skin and can be susceptible to chemical reactions. Therefore, the treatments normally used to kill fleas can be harmful to them. But it is very important that you rid your puppy of fleas because infestation can cause a large blood loss and even death. There are natural ways to get rid of the fleas on your puppy that won't be harmful to it. Take action as soon as you notice fleas on your puppy.

  • Dawn dish soap or
  • Puppy flea shampoo

      Fill a sink or a large bowl with warm water. Make sure the water is not too hot. Place the puppy in the sink and thoroughly wet his fur.

      Use Dawn dish detergent or puppy flea shampoo and lather the puppy's fur well. If you use puppy flea shampoo, make sure it is recommended for your puppy's age. If your puppy is too young, simply use the dish detergent.

      Rinse your puppy well, making sure that all of the soap is removed from its fur. Soapy remnants can harm the puppy's skin. The detergent or soap will kill all of the live fleas on the puppy and they should fall off into the water when the puppy is rinsed.

      Remove the puppy from the bowl and place it on a table or a counter. Begin brushing the puppy's fur with long, even strokes. After each stroke, remove any hair or fleas and place the fleas in the soapy water so that they will die. Make sure no fleas are on the comb when you brush the dog again.

      Repeat the combing process until you don't see any more fleas on your puppy.
