Identify the triggers. The first step to alleviating your dog's skin allergy symptoms is to pinpoint the offending substances. Allergies take time to develop, so the culprit is likely an allergen that has been in your dog's environment for some time. Talk to your veterinarian to help identify the triggers to your pet's skin allergies.
Test for the cause of your dog's allergy. After your veterinarian performs an examination, you may be able to determine the problem. If not, further testing may be necessary. Tests can include taking skin scrapings to check for mites, testing the ears for any infections, blood tests or patch tests of the skin. Sensitivity to food or rawhide treats can also be the cause of your dog's skin allergies.
Manage your pet's skin allergy. Once you make a determination as to what is causing the allergic reaction in your pet, take steps to prevent the allergy. Talk to your veterinarian about a home-prepared diet if the allergy is food-related. Other treatments may include antibiotics, antihistamines, cyclosporine, corticosteroids or topical ointments. Your vet will help you decide what is best.
