How to Get Rid of Hook Worms

Hookworms infect dogs and cats, especially at birth and immediately after. Most vets treat puppies and kittens for worms upon their first visit, whether they can see the worms or not. Pet owners see the worms or eggs either on the animal's anus or in its stool. Because hookworms feed off blood, they cause weakness in animals. It's important to treat the animal as soon as it is apparent what it has. Untreated hookworms lead to anemia and death.

Instructions

Buy an over-the-counter dewormer. Read the packing to make sure it removes hookworms. Over-the-counter dewormer is also used to remove roundworms.

    • 2

Give your animal the correct dosage, according to the package directions.

    • 3

Tell your animal, "No," when it licks its anus. This helps prevent the spread of worms. Also forbid your pet from rubbing its rear end on the floor.

    • 4

Wash all bedding in the washing machine.

    • 5

Look for worms in the stool. Scoop the fecal matter with a scooper and place it inside a plastic bag. Tie the bag closed and dispose.

    • 6

Take the animal to the vet if it hasn't improved in four to five days. The vet may give a stronger dewormer.

    • 7

      Keep infected animals separated.
