Aloe vera is known as the plant of immortality by the Egyptians, and was often brought as a gift to deceased pharaohs. The aloe plant was traditionally used in wound healing and as a laxative. Aloe is used today in many different products including lotions, sunblock and burn cream. When used in its natural state, aloe plant contains a gel-like substance that is often used to sooth skin conditions and wounds.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals lists aloe vera as a poisonous plant for dogs and cats. Dogs who consume this plant, often develop symptoms that are extremely uncomfortable.

Dogs that ingest aloe vera plant can develop bothersome gastrointestinal symptoms such as loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea. Some dogs also experience uncontrollable shaking or tremors and a change in urine color.
