Symptoms of Congestive Heart Failure in a Dog

With congestive heart failure in dogs, the heart isn't strong enough to adequately pump blood, causing a backup of fluids into other areas of the body. Congestive heart failure is the most common heart condition found in dogs. It typically occurs in dogs that are overweight and of old age. However, it also can be caused by a hereditary weakness or heartworms. The symptoms associated with heart failure in older dogs include, fatigue, difficulty breathing and a swollen abdomen. It is possible to relieve some symptoms.
  1. Labored Breathing

    • Labored breathing can be a sign of congestive heart failure. When the heart isn't pumping blood effectively, fluid builds up in the dog's lungs, which makes breathing difficult. If your dog suddenly has trouble breathing or appears short of breath, monitor it closely. If the symptom persists, take the dog to a veterinarian for examination.

    Swollen Abdomen

    • Fluid build up is common in dogs with congestive heart failure. When the heart can't pump normal amounts of blood throughout the body, fluid can be retained in the lungs and abdomen. If you notice that your dog suddenly has a pot-bellied appearance, this might be a sign of congestive heart failure.

    Fainting

    • When blood isn't circulating properly, it cuts off oxygen to the brain. Congestive heart failure impedes blood and oxygen supply and can result in fainting or dizzy spells. If your dog appears dizzy or is fainting, explain the symptoms to a veterinarian.

    Fatigue

    • A dog with congestive heart failure gets tired after the slightest activity. The heart is straining to pump adequate blood throughout the dog's body. If you're dog is quickly fatigued, it could be a symptom of congestive heart failure. Consult with your veterinarian.

    Treatment

    • There is no cure for congestive heart failure. However, there are ways to treat it. Treatments include veterinarian-prescribed drugs that can either increase the strength of the heart's contractions or decreases the amount the heart has to work.
