Causes
-
Ear mites are attracted to the warmth of an animal's ear canal and the moisture makes a perfect breeding ground for them. Their presence can cause damage to the ear canals and eardrum.
Symptoms
-
If a pet is scratching its inner ear and shaking its head excessively to the point of whining or yelping, it could be a sign of an ear mite infection. Pet owners can use a warm, thin damp cloth to clean out debris inside the ear. The debris will look like coffee grounds with a reddish hue.
Prevention
-
Regular ear cleaning and use of Frontline are the best way to prevent ear mites from infecting your animal. Frontline is an insecticide that contains a powerful ingredient called Fipronil. This attacks the bugs' nervous system and kills them quickly.
