How Can I Get My Havanese to Lose Weight?

A healthy weight for the average Havanese is between 7 and 13 pounds. These dogs are a hardy breed despite their small statue. Normally energetic and playful, like all dogs, if they are overfed and not given enough exercise, they can easily become overweight.
  1. First Visit the Vet

    • Take your Havanese to the vet for a checkup and to make sure there is no underlying condition causing your dog's weight gain. Thyroid issues or Cushing's disease are both hormone related and can cause any dog to gain weight. It's best to have your veterinarian give your Havanese a thorough exam before embarking on a diet-and-exercise program.

    Diet

    • Purchase good-quality dog food and feed your Havanese on a schedule. Measure each serving to avoid overfeeding. Limit the treats and avoid table scraps. Because the Havanese is a toy breed, overfeeding can be a problem. An active adult Havanese requires only two meals per day; puppies should be fed three or four times a day. It's best to make one meal dry food and the other wet or canned to help balance the diet.

    Exercise

    • Set up an exercise schedule for your Havanese. They are an active breed that could even go for a jog with you, provided you match their pace. Havanese have small legs, so set your stride accordingly. Even if you have a fenced-in yard, that doesn't mean your Havanese is going to exercise. Walk your pet twice a day and, for best results, give it some playtime, such as a game of fetch.
