Natural Ways to Treat Itchy Skin in Dogs

Itchy skin in dogs can develop from fleabites, allergies and dry skin. To treat itchy skin you should start by alleviating the itch, boosting the dog's immune system and then getting to the root cause of the problem. Consult a veterinarian to determine what is causing the itchiness. In the meantime, there are things you can do to naturally treat the itchy skin.
  1. Oatmeal

    • Oatmeal relieves itchiness by soothing the skin. Create an oatmeal paste by cooking the oatmeal in water until it is loose and beginning to form a paste. Once cool, apply to the affected areas on your dog. You can also use organic oat straw in your dog's bath. Boil 2 quarts of water with one pound of organic oat straw. Once cooled, add to your dog's bath water.

    Calendula

    • Use calendula to make a healing spritz four your dog. Add 10 to 15 drops of calendula tincture to 4 oz. of distilled water in a spray bottle. Use this to spray the affected areas on your dog's skin as needed.

    Fatty Acids

    • Omega-3 fatty acids help to heal itchy dry skin from the inside out. If your dog's skin is dry, it is possible it is lacking a certain fatty acid. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids can reverse skin problems and reduce itching caused by allergies. Flaxseed oil, pumpkin seed and fish oil are all excellent sources of fatty acids.

    Nutrition

    • Your dog may have an allergic reaction to an ingredient in the food you are feeding it. Taking the time to research the food products and ruling out ingredients that may be causing a food allergy will alleviate itchy skin.

    Echinacea

    • Often a weakened immune system contributes to dog skin problems, including itchy skin. Echinacea is a natural immune booster. Treat itchy skin by improving your dog's immune system.

    Grooming Habits

    • Bathing your dog too often can contribute to itchy, dry skin because you are washing away the natural oils your dog's body normally produces. Cut back on the frequency of baths you give to allow the natural oils to remain present.
