Primor For Dogs

Primor is a brand-name, prescription-only antibiotic produced by Pfizer Animal Health. The drug contains sulfadimethoxine and ormetoprim. Speak to your veterinary medical professional about concerns or adverse effects relating to Primor.
  1. Indications

    • Primor is indicated for treating a dog's skin, soft-tissue and urinary tract infections caused by Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis bacteria.

    Dose

    • Primor is given by mouth, once daily, for 21 days or less. The first dosage is 55 mg per kilogram of body weight. Subsequent doses are 27.5 mg per kilogram body weight. Tablets are available in 120 mg, 240 mg, 600 mg and 1,200 mg strengths.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects can include but are not limited to polyarthritis, swelling, fever, hemolytic anemia, increased urination, hepatitis, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, ataxia, seizures, behavior changes, excitability, hives, excessive thirst and acidic urine.

    Contraindications

    • Safety in pregnant dogs has not been evaluated. Dogs with liver damage, blood disorders or those with allergies to sulfonamide drugs should not be given Primor.
