How to Treat Hip Dysplasia With Adequan

Hip dysplasia is a condition in which the bones of the hip joint no longer connect, i.e. the ball of the hip joint is no longer firmly in the socket. It can be caused by genetics or, in some cases, nutrition. It is a painful condition that in extreme cases may be treated with surgery. Oral medication such as vitamin C and glucosamine chondroitin may ease the pain in milder cases.

Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan, commonly known as Adequan, can also help alleviate the pain of hip dysplasia in some dogs and puppies. It alleviates pain and may help new hip cartilage grow.

Make a veterinary appointment. Adequan is administered via intramuscular injection, so you will need to call and make arrangements with your veterinarian to give your dog the medication. Your vet will also be able to confirm whether or not your dog is likely to benefit from Adequan.

Take your dog to the vet. Once you've made the appointment, make sure to take your dog to the vet for his Adequan injection. While there, make sure to make a follow-up appointment or two -- Adequan must be administered twice a week for four weeks in order to be effective.

Monitor the injection site. As with all shots, monitor the injection site for pain, swelling, redness. Be sure to call your vet if your dog is unusually lethargic or ill after the Adequan injection.
