Latex Allergy Symptoms in Dogs

Dogs can be allergic to any number of things. The symptoms of a latex allergy are similar in both dog and humans. Latex gloves are an obvious source of irritation, but latex can also be found in disposable diapers, sanitary napkins, clothing waistbands, children's toys, pacifiers, baby bottle nipples and adhesive bandages. Your dog is most likely to encounter latex in a favorite toy or chew bone. Knowing the symptoms of latex allergies will help you help your dog.
  1. Rash

    • The most common symptom of a latex allergy is a rash. The rash develops after the dog has had direct contact with a latex-containing product. This can occur on the skin or on the mucous membranes of the dog's mouth or nose, especially if the dog has chewed, sniffed or mouthed an object made with latex.

    Extreme Scratching

    • An allergic rash may be accompanied by extreme scratching. If left untreated, the scratching will lead to hair loss and scarring of the dog's skin.

    Labored Breathing

    • A respiratory reaction is a less common symptom of a latex allergy in a dog, but is a more serious threat to your dog's health. This symptom is obvious and difficult to miss. The dog's breathing is heavy and the animal has a hard time taking each breath.
